Seeing purple and something sweet…

December 2, 2016

Well, I had to try it…  It fell from the sky like manna from Heaven.  (Although I don’t think I’ve ever appreciated it as much until today!)

100_5539Snow melts much faster than ice cubes and I had to go out back and collect several buckets full 4 times in a 24 hour period.

But boy, oh boy…  I loved the resulting dye!!!  For more information on ice dyeing see Sondra Millards blog:  https://shesgotmojo.com/

I’ll never feel quite as grumpy towards the white stuff again!

It did dry a little bit lighter than this, but it is really stunning.

I made caramel yesterday and added chocolate to my turtles and pretzels today.  It was a very productive day!

Thanks for stopping by!

Singin’ the blues…

November 28, 2016

Well, here I am again!  Between customer quilting and preparing for the Holidays, I’ve been out of touch.  But that means I’ve been doing lots of fun stuff!  Still dyeing for more color.  I went with blues this time…  100_5524I really love the way this one came out…  It looks cold!

Plus I needed some ornies for a swap on flickr.  I saw these fab ornies on FB and decided to give them a go!100_5527

Aren’t they fun?  Here’s the link that I used if you want to try them as well…

Dyeing for more color…

November 10, 2016

Hahaha…  Pun intended!  I am working on a quilt that will be in several shows next year.

I figured what better backing for it, then to make my own?!

Here’s a sneaky peaky of part of the quilt…100_5513

And here is the dyed backing waiting for ice…  Again, my powdered dyes came from Dharma Trading Company, http://www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html and I used Sondra Millard’s technique that I learned in her book “Having a Meltdown”. https://shesgotmojo.com/100_5507And the final result!  (Drum roll please…  DAdaddadadadadaddada)

100_5510Thanks for stopping by!!!  I’ll be back later to show you the whole quilt when it’s done and hanging in it’s first show!!!

Dying to dye!!!

October 25, 2016

Because I don’t have enough hobbies, I decided to try my hand at fabric dying!

(Always useful for a quilter no doubt…)  😉  I have a FB friend Sondra Millard who has published a fabulous book on ice dyeing.  It can be found here:  (Click on the “Home” icon to go to Sondra’s site.)

I had to give it a go!!!  100_5497My, my…  Not much to look at here…

100_5498Throw on some ice and…

Ta Da!!!

I think I’m in love!!!  Oh the projects in mind, the ideas racing through my brain!!!  A special thanks to Lisa Chin http://somethingcleveraboutnothing.blogspot.com/

for my first foray into dyeing fabric, and to Sondra Millard for the courage to continue!!!  Sondra’s book, “Having a Meltdown” tells you step by step how to do it.  I am soooooooo happy with the results!

Thanks for stopping by!  Smooches…

Sorry to be so scarce!!!

October 23, 2016

Well, here I go again being too busy to pay my blog much attention.  We did something so fun today I just had to share!

My family took a drive out to the Spiral Jetty on the Northern end of the Great Salt Lake.  The Spiral Jetty was created between 1938 and 1973 by Robert Smithson.  It is only visible when there is extremely low water levels in the Great Salt Lake.

dsc_8785There were so many things that called for photographs, I couldn’t help myself!

dsc_8701Somebody set this battered old chair on the swirl of the Spiral Jetty.  I’m not sure I’d dare sit in it!

dsc_8706The salt crystals were incredible!  The look like ice, but they’re salt…

dsc_8722There were these cool crater things that had salt crystals growing in the bottoms of them…  We wonder if they’re formed by some kind of mussels?

dsc_8724So beautiful!!!

dsc_8731What an incredible view!!!

dsc_8739There were numerous fields of salt that seemed to flow into the water.  I almost expected to slip!

dsc_8770And this is what salt does to metal…  There are old remains of a pier here that are being ravaged by salt and weather….

And what could end the day perfectly?dsc_8873A very cooperative juvenile Golden Eagle!  We saw 2 or 3 on the way there and back.  Definitely at least 1 adult and 1 juvenile.  What a great day!!!

Thanks for visiting the Spiral Jetty with me…

Utah Quilt Guild Quilt Festival!!!

September 26, 2016

uqg-quilt-fest-survivalJust in case you haven’t heard, we had some very interesting weather for Quilt Fest this year!!!

100_5442First, the torrential rain.  I was in the Vendors Mall helping out one of my volunteers…  The lights were flickering, so I told some of the Vendors that I would talk to management.  I walked out the door to this!  Looking out in the parking lot, I could see the bed cover on my truck flapping around in the wind.  I ran out to latch it down properly…  Whew!  Made it before the window broke or the cover was ripped off.

100_5450After the rain, came the rainbow!

100_5457We had a tornado (very unusual for Utah) touch down about 20 minutes to the North, although we had trees down all over the place here in Layton.  This U-Haul had been parked about 30 yards away from the Fifth wheel.  It came to within a foot of hitting it!

Word nerd that I am, I thought the name for the Fifth Wheel was Quite the co-incidence!

Meanwhile, back at the Davis Convention Center…

100_5453The Vendors Mall was dark.

100_5456The Quilt show was dark.

100_5446Linda M. Poole continued teaching in the dark once she and her students pulled the tables out into the lobby.

Talk about dedication!!!  Several of the teachers held classes by flash light and cell phone light!

Our Past President, Cindy Hutchinson went to the store and bought rolls/ meat/ cheese/ cookies/ fruit to keep us all happy and well fed.

It only took her an hour to go out as there were trees across the roads, in addition to downed power lines…

There were fireworks out across the street from the parking lot when the power company tried to turn back on the lights.  Needless to say, it wasn’t until 0500 in the morning before power was restored!  I forgot how hard it was to do anything in the dark!!!

More coming on classes I took at Quilt Fest a little while later…  It was such a fun time.  (Even the storm added a bit of excitement!)

Missing in action, or Too busy to be believed?

September 16, 2016

Yes, I am still in the land of the living.  I told my friend Susie that I hadn’t been on the computer in about a week.

She’s said, “I think it’s been longer than that!”  Well, sure enough, it’s been almost 2 weeks!

I have been sewing sewing sewing…  Here are a few of the things I’ve been working on…

100_5352I quilted this quilt for my “Quilty Hugs” group that donates to local charities.  Emily with http://www.auntemsquilts.com/ has a group that meets with her once a month to work on these quilts…

100_5359This is Roy Quilt Guild members who have finished working on their mystery quilts.  (Okay, the 2 on the left are mine as I taught the mystery!)  I’ll post more next month as the tops come in…

100_5371And here’s my little quilt at the fair…  😉

100_5394This is Susie’s quilt that I quilted for her which she created using Emily’s pattern!  (I love that!)

100_5397I quilted this for a client!

100_5400And last, but not least is my “Going Coastal” quilty for the MQTS group on flickr.

It’s a pattern that I revamped a bit from a previous mini quilt that I designed.

I wanted something that represented Patrick’s State Park in California where we camped this summer.

Thanks for stopping by!  I’ll try to be better next time!  😉

Going “Coastal”…

September 5, 2016

Working on Pieces and Parts for my Coastal Swap on MQTS on flickr…  I drafted out my design and I’m starting with my piecing.  I decided to make 2 of them, one for me and one for my partner.  100_5348

Yes, I know my cutting board looks like crap, but it’s just a leftover I’m making use of!

100_5350The main piece is together!    I’m so glad I get to keep one!

Thanks for stopping by…
